I recently got Ian Fallout 3 as a late birthday present. Watching him play reminded me of a fanfic I started after I played the first one. Please read and comment.
Exile or Good-Bye Vault 13
The rain outside the cave entrance seemed to match my mood. I filled my canteens, stripped off my Power Armor then howled my cries of frustration to the tune of the booming thunder overhead. I used every foul word and phrase I could think of. I had won and lost at the same time; entering my home in triumph only to be cast out. Where could I go? Who would take me in? If I knew this was how I’d be received, would I have stayed to perish in the explosion that destroyed the Master?
After a while, my thoughts became more rational. As the rain continued to wash off the dust and grime from my body, I considered my available options. I could go to Shady Sands and help defend it against invaders. I could do odd jobs for Killian Darkwater in Junktown. Or I could go up in the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel. After taking several deep breaths, I walked back inside the cave. I changed into the spare vault suit the Dana had given me when I had left to destroy the Master and sat down.
I must have been too focused on my own self to notice that wasn’t alone. An unexpected hand on my shoulder almost made me jump out of my skin. I looked to find not one but several people standing there. If it were possible, my eyes would have popped out and my jaw would have crashed to the floor.
“Andrew?” I asked the one who had touched me.
“We heard about what happened and we think he was wrong.”
Shaking my head and smiling I said, “what in the name of sanity are you guys doing here. Did he let you throw me a victory and going away party?” I joked. The Overseer told me that, “measures would be taken to prevent anyone else from jeopardizing the security of Vault 13.”
“Nope,” he said smiling back, “we’re going with you.”
I looked into his warm brown eyes certain he was joking. He was completely serious.
“Yeah,” said familiar female voice, “if he’s booting you out, he’s booting all of us out.”
I looked in her direction and smiled wider. Betty Joan, or B.J. as she preferred to be called, was a petite young woman who had sparkly green eyes, curly red hair, and a steadfast loyalty to her friends. I’m fairly introverted by nature.
I had met her after I had ended a previous friendship over a matter of principle. When she found out we shared an appreciation for the weirdly funny, we just seemed to click. Her vivaciousness seemed to balance my quiet nature.
Andrew brought me back to the present. “All of us chose to come with you because we’re you’re friends.” He nodded to an Amazonian blond woman in a medic jumpsuit. “Isn’t that right Dana?”
She answered,“ why should I waste my abilities here when a good medic would be more valuable out there.” Her posture was firmly set in an “I’m not taking no for an answer” state of mind. She had recently completed her training and also shared Andrew’s sense of justice. She just preferred to express it more subtlety.
I looked at Mike’s gray eyes noting that he hadn’t said anything yet. Like me, he preferred to observe and let others speak first. This also made him a good writer. When he noticed I was looking at him for say something, he smiled then ran one hand through his unruly sandy hair.
Then Andrew broke the silence by a loud clap of his hands and rubbed them together. In his usual enthusiasm he asked, “so what’s the plan?”
I was momentarily silent since all the ones I had hastily come up with earlier were solo. “Well, I was going to the Brotherhood of Steel after going past Shady Sands and Junktown.” Then I frowned after saying that. I didn’t know enough about the Brotherhood’s way to know if my friends would be let in after I destroyed the Master. Would they have to go through what I went through?
I felt my gut tighten as I ran one hand through my short black hair. “I’m not sure how things are with the Brotherhood so either Shady Sands or Junktown would be better.” I felt better after I said that. My voice sounding more confident, I added, “there’s Raiders and dangerous creatures on the surface. I think we’d be more welcome in those places.”
“Hey, sounds good to me boss,” said B.J
“Ah who put me in charge?” Was that squeaky voice mine?
“Well since you’ve got all this experience and you know people out there,” she shrugged as if it seemed obvious. Everyone else murmured in agreement, making it unanimous.
“Okay then,” I started spreading out my gear on the ground. Time to get down to brass tacks and get geared up. “Does everyone have water flasks?” When the others affirmed, I confidently answered, “good, next come Stimpaks.” I gave each of them 7.
“And armor? ” asked Dana curiously.
“Hmm,” I did some mental calculating. “I have one spare set here and another in Junktown.” I thought for a moment then carefully added, “I could get more there or at Shady Sands.” I nodded while smiling; that was doable.
“Is that where your kick-ass .223 is?” asked B.J. I had shown it to her when I had returned with the water chip. She was like a kid on Christmas when I let her hold it. After I nodded, she crowed, “dibs on both.”
Not wanting to pass up an opportunity to tease her, Andrew said, “pretty risky calling dibs on something that may or may not be there when we get to Junktown? ”
B.J.’s only answer was to mirror his smug grin with her arms folded in a gesture of supreme confidence.
As if to change the subject, Mike asked me, “I’ve heard that people barter for stuff out there, true?”
I nodded, “most of the time that’s how it’s done. The closest thing to currency is bottle caps.” I got out one of the one of the bags I had been storing them in and showed it to him. To make it easier to keep track, I had put 1000 caps in each bag. I’d saved enough caps saved to give each person 1 bag. The 2 left I put in my backpack.
While dividing the rest of my stuff, we worked out the order we would travel in. I took the front or “point” as they said in the old holo-vids with my Brotherhood armor and plasma rifle. B.J. was behind me with a nasty looking knife. Mike and Dana came after her with automatic pistols. Then Andrew covered the rear in my spare armor and a plasma pistol and we were ready to go.
For the first two days, the only dangerous creatures we encountered were the scorpions. B.J., Dana and Mike each got one with their knives. We saved the tails to give to Dr. Razlo to make his anitvenom serum.
We were almost at Shady Sands when we heard shots. About 6 or 7 of the ugliest Raiders were standing northwest of us. 3 were wearing metal armor and the rest wore leather jackets. All were filthy and when the wind changed, I heard B.J. softly comment about the smell.
The tension reminded me of an old western gunfight. Who would make the first move and who would be left standing when the shooting stopped? I held my plasma rifle in what I thought was a relaxed yet confident manner and tried to figure who the leader was of this pack.
After a few minutes, one of them stepped foreword and smiled at us; he was missing several teeth and the rest were brown. “How about you give us 100 caps each and we’ll think about letting you go to town.”
“How about you let us through and we’ll let you leave with your filthy hides intact.” I answered, charging my rifle and meeting his stare dead on.
He laughed then fired his shotgun at us. I returned fire after his shoot dinged my armor. He melted like fat in a frying pan screaming as he died. Some of the others turned tail and ran; the rest kept shooting out of disbelief. Andrew managed to kill 1 and wound 2 others. B. J. and Mike killed them with their own weapons.
It turned out to be a pretty decent amount of stuff among them. There were: 1 metal armor, 3 leather jackets, 525 caps, 3 shotguns, 2 pistols and extra clips of ammo. After we had divvied up the loot, we walked into Shady Sands to find out what was going on.
Dr. Razlo applauded when he recognized me. He was even more thrilled when we told him about the other “tails”. We got cleaned up at the clinic before we went to the mayor’s office.
Tandi was waiting outside with some of her friends. She was pleased when I mentioned that she had “grown a bit since I was here last time”. After introducing everyone, we went to her father, the town’s mayor Aradesh, to trade for better armor and weapons. He insisted on rewarding us by not only letting us take whatever we needed and holding a celebration in our honor.
During the feast, the mayor and the doctor filled us in on what happened since I left. About 6 months after yours truly had taken out the Khans truly, another Raider clan had rode in from the east and claimed their camp. This clan, called the Bandits, thought they could make an easy living by charging a toll to anyone entering or leaving town.
